Sommarläsning / summer reading

Sommaren är här! På sommaren är det dags att läsa böcker. Visst är det något särskilt med sommarläsning / summer reading? Jag läser många böcker under året; på svenska och på engelska. Mitt mål är därför att läsa minst en bok på tyska varje sommar.

Sinnebilden för sommarläsning är att läsa i hängmattan.

Du kanske planerar att läsa en speciell bok i sommar? Du kanske tänker läsa på stranden? Kanske föredrar du skuggan eller en regnig dag för din sommarläsning. För att hjälpa dig att komma igång har jag skapat en bingo för sommarläsning. Du hittar den här Sommarläsning

Välj en ruta i taget. Läs i minst 15 minuter. Kryssa rutan. Posta på globatris Facebook när du fått bingo! Du kan också försöka kryssa alla rutor!

Summer is here! A common plan for summer is to finally have time for reading that book. I read a lot of books during the entire year; in Swedish and in English. My goal every summer is to read at least one book in German.

I have made a summer reading bingo to kick start your reading. It’s in Swedish and you find it here Sommarläsning.

Instructions: pick one box. Read for at least 15 minutes according to the text in the box and tick the box. When you have completed a row (horisontal or vertical or diagonally) let me know 

Reading is essential to build your vocabulary; mother tongue or foreign or second language.

Tips for learning Swedish

Illustrating as a tool for learning new vocabulary

If you have a hard time remembering a certain word in a new language try illustrating it (in the broader sense of the word)!  You can also try sentences and expressions.

Set your mind free! This is also a great way for children where play meets learning.

Cut out letters from a magazine and glue them back on a piece of paper, use brushes and paint, a swirly handwriting or yarn. Take a piece of play dough and try to shape the word, take pictures or make a stop motion video.

You can also use lego, flower petals, different apps, a microphone, cookie dough, a co-actor, pens and pasta, sand or snow. If you are in Sweden you can use Kaviar to write on your sandwhich.

Idas sommarvisa

“Idas sommarvisa”, or “Du ska inte tro det blir sommar” is a popular spring/summer song among school children in Sweden.  It is often seen as a non-religious alternative to hymns (even though there is a reference to “someone to take action” in the lyrics – which of course is free to interpretation). The song is widely used during the ceremony of the last day of school (skolavslutningen) before the summer break.

“Idas sommarvisa” was featured in the Emil movie from 1973.

Learning about this tune and perhaps part of the song/a few new words is good practice not only for learning the Swedish language but also a for getting to know Swedish culture.

“Detta med de och dem”

Most of my Swedish language students know the theoretical difference between “de” (=they) and “dem” (=them). It is when we go into sounding like a Swede that it gets a bit more complicated :).

Why?

Most Swedes pronounce the two different words the same way – “dom” – which sometimes lead to confusion and mistakes by Swedes when writing.

Christmas craft – instructions in Swedish

In my previous post I promised to provide links to  instructions for Christmas craft in Swedish.  Why? Because it is fun, and because it is a way for you to activate both brain hemispheres when learning the Swedish language, which is beneficial for your acquisition hereof.

I practiced this method myself yesterday when I tried to fold a small star from an instruction in German. I did not succeed in making the star but I did learn a new German word – which I now have a visual of in my head; working on different sections of paper ribbons across one another. I tried to fold it anew this morning from a Swedish video but have to say I did not manage that one either on the first go :).
