I klÀdaffÀren / shopping for clothes in Swedish

I klÀdaffÀren /shopping for clothes in Swedish

Let’s practice conversation and vocabulary on the subject shopping for clothes in Swedish. First a few useful phrases; what do they say in the store and what do I say? Most sought after phrase is probably “Jag tittar bara!” / I’m just browsing!

Practice in real life. Start with one sentence or two. Move on to ask for a section of clothes you already know where they are, like “var finns jeansen?”. That way you feel comfortable with the answer even if you don’t fully understand it. Take it step by step.

There are links to a few exercises at the bottom of this post.

Vad sÀger expediten? What does the shop assistant say?

“Hej!” hello

“Hittar du vad du söker?” Do you find what you are looking for?

“Kan jag hjĂ€lpa dig?” Do you need help/Can I help?

“SĂ€g till om du vill ha hjĂ€lp med nĂ„got.” Let me know if you need help/assistance.

“Vi har 20 % pĂ„ ett helt köp just nu.” It’s 20 % off your entire purchase right now”

“Det Ă€r ingen bytesrĂ€tt pĂ„ varan.” There is no refund on the goods.

Vad sÀger du? What do you say?

“Jag tittar bara, tack.” I’m just browsing.

“Jag sĂ€ger till om jag behöver hjĂ€lp.” I’ll let you know if I need assistance.

“Var har ni jeansen?” Where are the jeans?

“Var hittar jag strumpor?” Where can I find the socks?

“Har ni blommiga blusar?” Do you have floral blouses?

“Kan jag prova denna?” Can I try this on?

“Var ligger provrummen?” Where are the fitting rooms?

“Finns denna i storlek 38”? Is this available in size 38?

“Har ni en storlek mindre?” Do you have a smaller size?

“Den passade inte tyvĂ€rr.” It did not fit me”

“Är kapporna pĂ„ rea?” Are the coats on sale?

Konversation / conversation

“Hej hej!”

“Hej!”

“Är du ute efter nĂ„got speciellt?” Are you after anything in particular?

“Nej, jag tittar bara.”

“SĂ€g till om du behöver hjĂ€lp.”

“Ja tack, det gör jag.” Yes, thank you, I will.

“Kan jag prova den hĂ€r klĂ€nningen?” Can I try this dress on?

“Ja visst, provrummen Ă€r dĂ€r borta.”

“Finns den förresten i en annan fĂ€rg?” Btw, is it available in another color?

“Nej, den finns bara i blĂ„tt.” .. in blue

“Okej.”

“Passade den?”

“Nej, inte riktigt; har du den i en storlek mindre?” No, not really …

“Vi ska se; vad hade du dĂ€r? En 42:a?” Let’s see; what did you have there? …

“Nej, det Ă€r storlek 40.”

“Jag ska titta i datorn om vi har en pĂ„ lagret.” I will check the system to see if we have one in stock.

“HĂ€r har vi en i storlek 38. Vill du prova den?”

“Åh tack, vad bra! Ja, jag testar den.” Ah, thank you, good. I’ll try it.

“NĂ€sta!” Next!

Hello, I would like this dress.

“Ja, den Ă€r sĂ„ fin. Den Ă€r alldeles nyinkommen. Är du medlem?” Well, it is so pretty! It has just arrived. Are you a member?

“Nej, jag Ă€r inte medlem. Hur blir man det? Kostar det nĂ„got?” No, I’m not a member. How do I become one? Does it cost money?

“Nej, det Ă€r gratis. Du fĂ„r bonus pĂ„ alla dina köp. Du fĂ„r ocksĂ„ rabatterbjudanden ibland. Jag behöver bara lĂ„na ditt id-kort. ”  No, it’s free. You get bonus on all your purchases. You will also get special discounts from time to time. I need to borrow your id.

“HĂ€r, varsĂ„god.” Here you go.

“SĂ„, dĂ„ var det klart. Det blir 499 kronor. Kontant eller kort?” So, that will be it. 499 please. Cash or card?

“Jag betalar med kort. Hur lĂ€nge Ă€r det öppet köp?” I’ll pay by card. How many days is the purchase of approval?

“Det Ă€r öppet köp i 30 dagar. Du kan alltsĂ„ prova hemma i lugn och ro. SlĂ„ din pinkod. Kvittot lĂ€gger jag i pĂ„sen.” Purchase of approval is 30 days. You can try the dress again in the comfort of your own home. Enter your pin. The receipt is in the bag.

“Tack!”

“Tack tack, ha en trevlig dag!” … have a nice day!

“Detsamma, hej dĂ„!” The same to you, bye!

Vacuum cleaner – a delicious Swedish pastry

This delicious pastry is commonly known as “dammsugare” in Swedish (=vacuum cleaner) referring to the look of old vacuum cleaners. The official name is Punch-roll. It’s covered with marzipan, the interior made of yesterdays crushed cookies and cakes (as if there would be leftovers…) butter, cacao and … flavored with punch liqueur. The “dammsugare” is usually made of green marzipan but I found a pink one with a #botanical pattern.

en kaffe, ett kaffe

Kaffe – en eller ett?

Coffe – indefinite article en or ett?

It depends on if we refer to a cup of coffee or coffee as a product.

A few examples:

Jag vill ha en kaffe, tack.

En kaffe skulle smaka bra nu!

Det Ă€r ett dyrt kaffe.

Kaffet Àr verkligen gott!

Same goes for

fika …

Ska vi ta en fika?

Fikat klockan tre var instĂ€llt.

… and öl

En öl, tack!

Vilket öl vill du ha? (Ett öl)

App question card game for practicing Swedish

App question card game for practicing Swedish

I give my students lots of questions. Sometimes the questions are easy to answer, sometimes they are not. I like to challenge my students. They like to be challenged! That’s how they improve and develop their Swedish language knowledge! I vary between letting my customers know the questions in advance or … just surprise them! When I send questions beforehand I expect longer answers and perhaps a discussion or an argument. When the questions are a surprise it usually reveals what needs to be worked on – spontaneous talking, vocabulary for a special topic, grammar or just expressing in Swedish that you do not know, or have never ever thought about that question before! It doesn’t so much matter what my students say as long as they say it in Swedish.

I have various tools for generating questions – first of all my creativity, then some board game cards and other topic cards.

Here is an app you can use for generating random questions. Try to answer a question on a daily basis.

The card game won the Intercultural Innovation Award in 2014. You can read more about the project and the card game here.
